Once July hits in Ohio it seems like Mother Nature finally decides we’re allowed to have some sunshine. Not only that but she decides to make it sweltering hot for the next 2 months to make up for the grey skies of the past 10 months. My husband has a graphic tee that reads “10 months Endor 2 months Hoth” for all you Star Wars fans out there.
The best way to cope with the heat is lots of pool time and plenty of homemade ice cream and popsicle treats. I love working with American Dairy Mideast to bring you some of my favorites dairy recipes every year. June is National Dairy Month and the month when most ice-cream is produced. July is National Ice Cream Month!
Today, I shared my most creamy French-style custard Chocolate Ice Cream recipe on their site. When I saw these glazed donuts in my kitchen, I knew we would make Donut Ice Cream Sandwiches. So my kids and I gathered up all of our favorite toppings, the homemade chocolate ice cream, and a few scoops of vanilla we had in the freezer and got to work. Brown Sugar Candied Walnuts would be a great topping!
I would suggest that adults only slice the glazed donuts as they are sticky and slippery. The best way I found to slice them was to lay them flat on a cutting board that has a raised edge. Use the edge to rest your serrated knife and carefully slice through.
When I talk about dairy cows what image comes to mind? I’m guessing the classic black and white spotted beauties (called Holsteins) that grace children’s books and school posters. But did you know that Jersey dairy cows produce milk that’s perfect for making ice cream? Their milk has higher percentages of protein and butterfat. If you’ve never seen a Jersey cow I can tell you that they are adorable and you’ll want to just give them a cuddle they’re so cute.
