Dairy-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
Always seek the advise of your doctor or allergist concerning food allergies. Also, check EVERY LABEL EVERY TIME.
I would suggest Enjoy Life Top 8 Allergen Free Chocolate Chips.
Hi there Katrina fans! This is Dorothy, from Crazy for Crust, the dessert blog where I bake up lots of treats and serve them with a slice of my life.
I wish I could say I was super excited to be here today, but I probably speak for everyone when I say I wish Katrina could be here instead!
But anyway, because she’s not, you’re stuck with me. But don’t be upset – I’m super fun. I love crust – but I love sugar too. Allllll of it. I don’t think I’ve ever met a treat I didn’t like.
I mean, I’m all about buttery, rich, chocolatey things. Like….brownies. Or…brownies in pie. Or funfetti gooey bars.
But can you imagine what it would be like if you couldn’t just grab any old cookie at a party? I cannot imagine what it’s like to have food allergies.
One of my daughters little friends is allergic to dairy. For a baker…that’s kind of catastrophic, right? I mean all the good things have butter in them. Especially cookies!
So when my daughter has her friend over, I always try and make some sort of treat she can have.
FYI, my house is known as the “treat house”. Send your kids to me and I’ll send ’em home sugared up. With a bag for you!
That’s how these dairy-free chocolate chip cookies were born.
I pretty much substituted oil for butter in one of my favorite cookie recipes. I added brown sugar because I just love brown sugar in cookies.
These cookies were really good – even for the butter lovers. They were chewy and dense, like a cookie should be…just without any dairy!
Dairy-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup vegetable or canola oil
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and/or silpat baking liners.
- Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Stir and set aside.
- Stir together oil and sugars.
- Turn mixer (with butter mixture bowl attached) on low. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing completely. Mix in vanilla extract. Add flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until combined. Add chocolate chips and stir to combine.
- Drop by tablespoonfuls prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 8-9 minutes (mine were one tablespoon sized balls and cooked in about 8 minutes). Let cool for 5 minutes, and then remove from pans to cool completely.
I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you’ll come visit me sometime at Crazy for Crust. I’ll talk your ear off and ply you with sugar.
Get well soon Katrina!

As of December 2016 Ghirardelli Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips are no longer dairy free. They changed the recipe and it now uses milk.
Just a heads up Ghiradeli are no longer Dairy free 🙁 but I’m gonna give this recipe a shot with enjoy life!
These are amazing! I’ve made these twice in the last month. They are chewy and delicious and not greasy like other recipes I’ve tried. Thanks again.
I just tried these today as my son is allergic to dairy. Delicious cookies! The vegetable oil made them so moist and the dairy free chocolate chips (I used Enjoy Life brand mini chips) were so tasty. Thank you!
I wanted to make these as a special treat for a friend of mine who suffers from lactose intolerance.. I bought the Ghiradelli brand chips as you suggested. In the list of ingredients it states that it contains whole milk powder. How can they be dairy free?
These really are delicious cookies. I’m so happy I found a dairy free chocolate chip cookie my kids can enjoy. It’s so easy to make. Mine need to bake for 11 mins. These are my go to cookies.
let me start off by saying amazing recipe. They were soft so soft and moist. Secondly the only reason I tried a recipe with no Dairy it was because I had no butter and I had very little milk and my daughter who is 4 just had to have a chocolate chip cookie so I went to Google and I found this recipe I got worried at the end of the recipe, because I ended up with a cornmeal like texture so I thought I did something wrong I didn’t mind it just needed more moisture so I added about what little milk I had about half a cup and it began to look like dough I also added 1tsp salt, 1 tsp baking powder, Andi don’t regret the come out they are the best cookies I have had in such a long time. Yes I defeated the purpose of no dairy but regardless this is a WINNER!
I made these and used coconut oil instead of the vegetable oil- and added a splash of almond milk to the batter and these turned out awesome!!! Thank you for posting this recipe 😀
Unfortunately the Ghiradelli Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips aren’t dairy free, they contain Whole Milk Powder. Sad face! I’m sure these cookies are good though!
This recipe does not make 36 cookies!
Thank you for these! New to dairy allergy with my 6yo. We have dairy free chocolate chips, but a lot of recipes I have looked at contained things I didn’t have in my house. This is perfect. A big batch of chocolate chip cookies is going to make our day.
These cookies are amazing I am unable to eat dairy and have been looking for a lactose feee chic chip cookie recipe and I have finally found it, thank you!! I used dark brown sugar as this is all I had in the cupboard and used sunflower oil and whole wheat flour they turned out perfect the only thing I will change next time is to add less choc chips. Thanks again I can enjoy choc chip cookie again. 🙂
I was pleasantly surprised when I baked these cookies for someone who can’t eat dairy products. The consistency of the dough was very thick, so I thought the cookies might be dry. They were not. They turned out very good, and I recommend this recipe.
Ghiradelli chocolate is not dairy free. It even states this on the package. Enjoy Life chips are a better alternative.
Forgot to add that I also had a problem with the dough being a bit crumbly and the chocolate chips falling out, which is why I added the almond milk – it helped.
I just tried these cookies. They are so good. I was scared about not using butter but it worked. I’m really struggling with the dairy-free lifestyle (I love cheese more than anything) and these made me feel like I can actually tackle this. I halved the recipe just to try it out, and added a splash of almond milk. The few people I love enough to share these with loved them and were mad I didn’t do a full batch. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this recipe! My 6 year old is allergic to dairy and he has Heiner Syndrome on top of it so we have to be super careful. This is my go to for chocolate chip cookies and people request I make them all the time because they’re that good! A suggestion for those that are questioning the allergy friendliness of the chicane chips, we use the Enjoy Life brand and they are free of the 8 most common allergens and taste really good. Happy baking!
Since I was born I was allergic to dairy which was not something fun during parties so I would always search for some cookies or cakes recipes that I could make myself but I would always find recipes with only milk. So I just want to say that this really helped me and i will try to do it.
Ps: it looks super delicious!!
These are PERFECT!!!! Thank you so much! I love this recipe!!
i can just tell that they are going yo be so good
wow
These are PERFECT. My only problem was the dough not binding the chocolate chips in very well, they sort of crumbled out. But it didn’t affect the taste or texture one bit. Excellent! For those that keep kosher like me and don’t like to bake margarine this is delicious. 👍🏽
I ended up making these gluten free by using gluten free flour instead of all purpose and I ended up not having quite enough oil so I added some coconut oil. They turned out really good! I did however have to add an extra egg since the dough was very crumbly from the gluten free flour. I have been craving a sweet treat that I could have that wouldnt make me feel sick and these I think are it!
I also had trouble with the chocolate chips falling out of the dough – but the end cookies were really good. I think I will used fewer chocolate chips next time.
Thank you so much for making this recipe. I substituted the eggs for banana because my daughter cannot have eggs. She also has a sensitivity to dairy too. These are by far the best cookies I’ve ever ate. Almost like Mrs. Fields, so soft and melt in your mouth.
Shop rite semi sweet chocolate chips do not contain milk and are not produced on shared equipment. They have been my go to. Earths Balance makes a great line of milk free butter substitutes. They come in a tub and sticks which are great for baking if yiou want the consistency of softened butter vs oil. Thanks for the recipe. Can’t wait to try it.
check the ingredients on the chocolate Chips, anything containing milk or milkfat Is NOT dairy free. Also, eggs are not dairy. A product cannot be considered vegan if made with eggs, but dairy only refers to a cow, not chickens. Cow eggs would be dairy……
Not sure what I did wrong. Dough was not combined and chocolate chip kept falling out of the dough.
I wanted to let folks that might be interested know that I used white whole wheat flour to make these and they were very good, I did have to add a couple of tablespoons of almond milk because of the whole wheat flour. They are a tasty compromise when I’m trying to be healthier. Thanks for the great recipe!
Lovely cookies! A perfect balance of crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. We added a touch of cinnamon too, for a tiny holiday taste. I’ve mentioned them in my blog H in HK because they were so good!
Eggs are not dairy. You may be allergic to both.
Michelle, a tip for finding a recipe with no eggs or dairy products, search for vegan chocolate chip cookies. Dairy free suggests that there are no lactose products.
Ghirardelli semi sweet chocolate chips do not contain dairy. They are processed on the same equipment as other products that contain dairy, however the equipment is cleaned and flushed between changing product flavors. Ghirardelli is considered vegan by PETA, and was given a Libby Award in 2009. The “may contain dairy” warning is mostly for consumers who keep kosher. A little research goes a long way.
This recipe is NOT DAIRY free!!! This recipe contains eggs – Eggs are dairy! Very disappointed to see the header state dairy free,
eggs are not dairy. dairy is anything that comes from a cow, milk protein.
No eggs are not dairy. They don’t come from cows or contain milk.
Eggs aren’t dairy
Tina- in case you see this- it’s the semi sweet baking chips by Ghiradelli. They do not contain dairy but the label states “may contain dairy”- I’m assuming because of the shared equipment, although I don’t know why they don’t just say that. I bought the chips yesterday and I’ll be making these cookies today!
I’m a new vegan but confused bc Ghiradelli brand, at least the 60% cacao brand that I’ve always purchased, says “milk fat” on the label. Milk fat is dairy free? Or were you possibly talking about a different type of their chocolate chips? Thanks!
When in doubt I ALWAYS suggest calling the manufacturer to get their current info on allergens. Thank you!
Very excited to come across this recipe. I have a dairy allergy- and am thrilled to try this tonight with my little girl. This will allow us Mommy/Daughter time while making a favorite treat of ours.
I just made these tonight when I realized I was out of butter. These were delicious in a pinch, THANK YOU!
Just letting those that can not have dairy know that Ghirardelli is not dairy free! Although it doesn’t contain direct dairy, it is manufactured on the same equipment as dairy containing products. For those who have severe dairy allergies, cross contamination is very important. always make sure you read your food labels properly and this includes kosher labeling.
GREAT comment! My son has a peanut allergy and we are always very diligent about cross contamination too. Have a great week!
I used enjoy life choc chips they are dairy, but and soy free!
Christine- I haven’t tried it my self but I’m pretty sure you could use flax eggs.
Hey I have made these two times for my SIL who can’t have dairy. Absolutely perfect!
My question is, can the dough be frozen???
Thanks.
I like how they are dairy free but my diet requires oil free as well (i’m on a low-fat/dairy free diet due to gallstones). What can I use as a substitute?
perfect! I have been on the look out for some great, simple diary free treats for a friend. awesome!
I love having alternative recipes, this is great!
These look like the perfect chocolate chip cookies 🙂
Yayyyyy Dorothy! These cookies look fab-and love the dairy free-ness 😛
Any suggestions to making these egg free? They look so yummy.
There is egg replacer
I have been meaning to do cookies with oil instead butter! These look wonderful!
Thank you so much for this recipe. I’ve been looking for dairy free options for my son who has a milk allergy. These are perfect. I have made them twice and both times were great. I do have to leave them in my oven about 12 minutes instead of the 8. I’m so happy I found cookies I can make for him to eat that does not sacrifice taste.
Dorothy, they are PERFECT! I, too, like to use Ghirardelli’s because they just taste so damn good! 🙂
Dorothy, so sweet of you to come over here to Katrina’s blog to support not only her, but those with a dairy allergy with your fabulous Dairy-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies! It is so important to be mindful of others and their dietary restrictions. (My blog is built on this philosophy.) Recently, I learned I have a severe allergy to dairy and am still recovering from it. It’s not fun. And, you’re right…it is pretty catastrophic for a baker…as I am one, too! Now, my focus will be adding dairy-free recipes to my blog as well as gluten-free and grain-free. By the way…Enjoy Life has a line of dairy-free, soy-free and gluten-free chocolate chips! Yay. Thanks for sharing, my friend. And…more hugs and kisses for you, Katrina! XOXO P.S. Will pin to several group boards during peak Pinterest time. 🙂
