Rainbow Chocolate Chip Cookies
Rainbow Chocolate Chip Cookies in every color of the rainbow! Why be boring when you can be awesome?
Let me tell you why I need some rainbow chocolate chip cookies in my life mmmmmmkay? Have I told you I’m currently in the middle of training to run my first 5K? Well I’m 5 weeks into my 9 weeks of training and I just completed my first 20 minute running interval on Friday. If you are not familiar with the program it is basically a training program for sissies like me who start out by running for 60 seconds and walking for 3 minutes. Gradually your running time/distance increases and the walking disappears.
I have an app on my phone where a robot voice chimes in every few minutes telling me what I’m supposed to be doing. Robot voices are very effective by the way. I have this secret fear if I don’t start running when the robot voice tells me to then my phone will get all Terminator on me. I’m convinced of it.
On Friday I was trying my best not to have a serious discussion with my phone in public about how I didn’t think I was ready for 20 minutes of straight up running. Terminator phone ignored me and chimed in with a very convincing, “START RUNNING NOW.” I obeyed of course and kept my mouth shut. Somewhere around the 15 minute mark I was passed up by a 60 year old man wearing silver swishy pants and sporting an old school tape-player Walkman. I may have been hallucinating though. I can’t be sure.
Visions of oldish men with pants the same color of their hair aside, I picked up my pace and finished my run to the tune of Mama Mia. I’m pretty sure Flash and I were listening to the same thing. Again though I can’t be sure. Then I came home and ate cookies. That is the one thing I remember with clarity- cookies. Just to be on the safe side I kept my phone in the other room. Robo Phone can tell me when to run but I don’t want it telling me if I can eat a cookie or not.
Rainbow Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 ½ Cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 Cup shortening, I used butter-flavored Crisco
- ¾ Cup sugar
- ¾ Cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- Gel food coloring
- 1 Cup mini milk chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350. Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl; set aside.
- Beat shortening and sugars until combined and creamy. Add eggs and extract.
- Add the dry ingredients and mix well.
- Divide the dough into 6 equal sections and use 1 drop of gel food coloring for each section. Knead the color into the dough. {I use Americolor food color gel. I buy it at Hobby Lobby.}
- Fold in chocolate chips (about 1 Tablespoon to each section). Use a 2 tablespoon cookie scoop to drop dough onto baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.
A Few Notes on Food Coloring
- I used Americolor GEL food coloring which can be purchased online or at Hobby Lobby (Amazon link provided at the end of this post).
- Food color gel is NOT decorating gel.
- Wilton also makes gel food coloring (available at Wal-Mart, Michaels, and JoAnne’s). I do not prefer it but it is more readily available and would produce better results than using liquid food color found in most grocery stores.
- You use one teeny tiny drop of Americolor gel food coloring to get these vibrant colors. To get a vibrant color with liquid food coloring you may have to add up to a teaspoon of coloring (which I do NOT recommend). The color may still not be as vibrant and adding that much liquid will change the consistency of the dough.
- I am including the links to the basic color pack and the “electric” colors. I use both sets in my kitchen. To see some of the electric colors check out my Rainbow Swirl Cake.

They tasted delicious I would rate this
The thing it’s I wish it was a little thicker than that it got a little crushed but out of five stars I would rate it a 4
My son looooves Rainbow cookies but I buy the Keebler ones…no more! I will screen shot this recipe and make them for Christmas for him. I will also buy the food coloring.
Thanks…Lia Liz
Wow, these cookies looks delicious. I look forward to making this soon.
These are so super cute!
Looks amazing! Has anyone tried to make these cookies with oil instead of shortening? (Try to be a little bit healthy sometimes..)
Thanks!
I see in the ingredients list that you have listed sugar twice 3/4 cup sugar and 3/4 cup brown sugar, is this correct?
I need to make some blue cookies for my daughters school tomorrow. I am wondering if they hold their shape with out puffing up a lot due to I also got to use a cookie cutter and make letters.
Ive made sugar cookies last time but I wanted to do these this time
Hi, Katrina, do you mind to advise the names of the colors you’re using? I am also using Americolor. The colors are: Red Red, Lemon Yellow, Leaf Green, Sky Blue, Violet, Orange, Deep Pink and Chocolate Brown. I couldn’t get the colors like yours at all. Not even close.. please help. thanks. 🙁
I love cookies and dessert, but when they are so colorful and fun, it just melts my heart, would want all of them for me.

hi, love these colourful cookies..what type of sugar did you use? can I use any type or icing sugar?
Your cookies are gorgeous! I just discovered Americolor GEL last year. I love it!
^oops, I mean color the eggless cookie dough like in the above for ice cream cones!
…now I want to pair these with the eggless cookie dough batter recipe you provided and put on top of ice cream cones with vanillia frosting and rainbow sprinkles on top!! 🙂
hello..im form malaysia.. can i get the recipe?? im in love with ur cookies.. mix colour.. <3 tq 🙂
Do you think theses would freeze well? I would like to make them ahead for a birthday party and freeze them so I have less to do when the party gets closer!
I tried to make blue chocolate chip cookies, but they came out a weird green instead. I figured it was the brown sugar messing with the color, but my recipe is the same as yours except I use margarine instead of shortening. How did you get your colors to work right?
Hi Halle, Thank you for writing. I get this question a lot so I have updated the post to show exactly what food coloring I use. Did you use liquid food coloring? I’m thinking that may have been the issue?
can I use liquid food color?
because I am currently in Korea and
don’t know where to find Gel food color…
Some other readers have used liquid food coloring. Just know that the color won’t be as bright. Thanks for stopping by!
This is such a great idea! I go to a brunch ever year for Vancouver Pride and these would be the perfect treat to bring along. Although it is still months away I’m already excited to make these for it! Thanks for sharing the recipe 🙂
I love the orange ones!
How did you keep them from starting to brown on the top? The flavor is great. And the color on the inside of mine are bright blue like I wanted, but the tops started to brown (like a normal cookie does). If I left them in for less time they didn't cook through.
Hello, Katrina
I am so pleasantly surprised with your blog. I have seen your blog for the first time today, and I can't believe what kind of recipes can be found here. You get one new follower that is sure! 🙂 This is so cute and interesting. Great work!

Oh my gosh! I absolutely love these!!! Thanks so much for inspiring my weekend baking binge 🙂
Gimme that robo phone, I know where to put it to shut him up. 🙂 You're such an inspiration with that running stuff.
These cookies are just gorgeous. I wonder if you eat too many if it will color the poo – that would be a bit disconcerting. Perhaps I'll make them and not eat too many just to be on the safe side.
I've given you two awards at the bottom of my new post. This recipe alone deserves them.

I understand that food coloring isn't for everyone. And believe me I don't use it in everything I bake 🙂 I did use Americolor gel so the color is intense even with just one drop- which is what I used. It isn't any more than what someone would use to frost a batch of cupcakes. Even so, each person is entitled to her opinion. Thanks for stopping by.
What a brilliant idea! Love these Katrina!!!

I just finished making these cookies, they turned out AMAZING. Instead of using chocolate chips I used M&M's, matching the M&M to the color of the cookies. My kids loved them. Thanks for the idea.
Wow, never seen anything like it!

Too funny about the older man with silver pants!! I think I am familiar with robo – voice as I might use a similar app for my walking. But I only walk, so good for you to run! 🙂 These cookies are absolutely beautiful! 🙂
