A Cute Hoot!
Open Faced Whoopie Pie Owls recipe and tutorial
Some things are just cute: baby toes, an elderly couple walking hand-in-hand, a toothless kindergarten smile, a glowing mom-to-be, puppies, and THESE COOKIES!
Four Year Old Foodie and I worked on it together and he was able to help with just about every step. I can’t even begin to describe to you how easy it was to put these together. Oh wait – yes I can:
These were a quick treat for my sister-in-law’s birthday (she’s a bird lover). You could certainly make these with chocolate cupcakes but I used whoopie pies. My grocery store sells them in the bakery section in packs of four, so this turned out eight cute hoots. You could use your own whoopie pie recipe too. Moms, try to ignore the look of horror you get when you go through the checkout lane with whoopie pies, Oreos, Jr. Mints, and M&Ms.
The only steps that were not kid-friendly were cutting the eyebrow Oreos in half and also lightly scraping the Oreo creme with a butter knife. I did this to get a whiter eye and to take off any chocolate crumbs left after twisting the cookie open. To get a clean cut use a sharp flat knife or even a metal spatula. I think the best part of this task was having lots of “mess up” Oreos.
I think it was a success! He insisted on eating all of the “body parts” by himself but he did share the cookie with his mama!! Yum! 🙂
Have fun making these!
Very cute indeed – four year old foodie looks like he agrees wholeheartedly!
katrina, i’m a big fan of you…such a sporty mom you’re. i “liked” you in the mom blogs…
i didn even realise they were cookies intially…bravo! good show…keep it up!
and a big buzzzzzz and huggggggggg!
Super Cute!
What darling cookies! I think even I could make those 🙂
Very very cute…..
Thank you!! Super-easy, right?! Yes Four Year Old Foodie didn’t want to give any to the birthday girl!! ha ha! ♥-K
haha..that was very sweet katrina. thank you. forgot to tell you…chk out judyscakesandtreats.wordpress.com and nashplateful.blogspot.com. these ladies need a shout out!!
lemme head out to one another recipe of yours here…
They are just brilliant! They certainly look easy and best of all, see that little face eating that huge cake! Katrina, you know how to make people happy!
Very cute indeed . . . I’m sending this to my daughter. Her four year old is having a birthday Monday — this would be great for them to do together!
Gah, adorable! I like how it doesn’t require any complicated techniques either. I’ve read dessert decorating books that include all sorts of materials and techniques that you *know* you won’t be able to duplicate as perfectly as the pictures show. But these – I think I could pull these off to look just as cute as yours!
Mary- that is so true! I’m not kidding when I say my four year old put these together with almost no help from me. 🙂
These are too cute!!! I love the pic of your 4 yr old foodie! I was going to make cupcakes with my fiend’s 3 yr old twin boys, but we might make these. Wish me luck:)
These are super cute and I love that you used whoopie pies instead of cupcakes. They look like a great treat that comes together quickly!

These are the cutest things ever!! Ok wait. I think I say that for just about everything you make. Am I starting to sound repetitive? But it is so true. Another one bookmarked!!
Thanks so much for letting me know you made them. They look awesome and what a great idea using whoopie pies instead of cupcakes! Getting the white parts clean are the trickiest part, I agree, but you’re also totally right about the joys of having the “failed” ones to snack on. Happy St. Patty’s Day!
Those are so cute. My sister loves owls so this would be perfect to make for her birthday!
