We like to keep our kids active all summer with lots of time to run and play outside. Of course we’re always stocked up with healthful, easy-to-grab and quick-to-eat treats. My kids often reach for frozen yogurt when its warm outside so these Frozen Fruit and Yogurt Discs are great to keep on hand.

Often we freeze tubes of yogurt, or we make flavorful popsicles like these Green Smoothie Parfait Popsicles or these Milk and Cereal Breakfast Popsicles. When our kids were toddlers I used to make and freeze tiny bite-sized dots of yogurt for them to enjoy. These days, we make them a bit bigger and pack them full with diced fruit like berries, mandarin oranges, and kiwi. Clearly we LOVE our delicious, dairy-filled foods! My children recently toured Clardale Dairy Farm in Canal Fulton, Ohio—just down the road from where we live.

We talked to 5th generation dairy farmer and current president of Ohio Farm Bureau Federation Frank Burkett about the importance of dairy farming and how he takes care of nearly 700 cows daily, all while keeping neighbors like us in mind. Says Frank:

We farm in a very populated area, so everything we do here, we make sure we do it as a community with our neighbors in mind. We make our best efforts to work around holidays and weekends when applying manure or rotating crops so we can be considerate of our neighbors. We also offer farm tours regularly so that neighbors can visit and learn about what happens on the farm and ask questions about what we do.

My kids especially loved visiting the calf barn and learning about the calves’ trackers that allow them to come and go and eat on their own schedule without being over or underfed. Their ID tag will tell a computer which calf it is and then will provide a small amount of feed if it’s time for her to eat. Each calf will consume two half-gallon bottles per day.

My friend and colleague Aimee from Shugary Sweets recently interviewed Frank on his farm. If you would enjoy hearing more about his commitment to his local community. watch her short video- Being “Frank” About Neighbors.
